Michael Systma, Ph.D.

Dr. Systma is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia, a Certified Sex Therapist, and a Certified Sexual Addictions Specialist (Trainer level). He is also an ordained minister with The Wesleyan Church and has served as a staff pastor for churches with attendance from 30 to over 1000. He is currently appointed to Building Intimate Marriages, Inc. by The Wesleyan Church. Michael received his BS in Christian Ministry from Indiana Wesleyan University, an MS in Community Counseling from Georgia State University, and a diploma in Christian counseling from Psychological Studies Institute. Michael also has a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in Child and Family Development / Marriage and Family Therapy where he specialized in marital sexual therapy. His dissertation was on “Sexual Desire Discrepancy in Married Couples”. Michael is a co-founder of Sexual Wholeness, Inc.

Dr. Mark Laaser

Dr. Mark Laaser is the Director of Faithful & True, a Christian counseling center specializing in sexual health and addiction. Dr. Laaser is nationally-regarded as the leading authority in the Christian counseling community in the field of sexual addiction. Mark has published a dozen books on the subject, including his groundbreaking book, Healing The Wounds of Sexual Addiction, his 3-book Men of Valor series and his latest book, The Fight of Your Life with Dr. Tim Clinton. Mark is also the host of The Men of Valor Program, Faithful & True’s weekly online radio/podcast available at faithfulandtrue.com and on iTunes.

Dr. Laaser lectures around the world and teaches at religious organizations, colleges, universities and treatment centers. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Iowa and a Masters of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Mark has worked in the field of sexual addiction for over 27 years and together with his wife, Debbie Laaser, MA, LMFT, co-authored their highly-acclaimed book, The Seven Desires of Every Heart.

Marnie Farree, LMFT, CSAT

Marnie Farree, MA, LMFT, CSAT is a national leader concerning sexual addiction, particularly in women. The workshop program she established in 1997 for female sex addicts was the first of its kind in the country, and her book No Stones: Women Redeemed from Sexual Addiction, was the first Christian book to address the issue among females. She is also the volume editor and contributing author of Making Advances – A Comprehensive Guide for Treating Female Sex and Love Addicts, which is the first clinical book on this topic.

Marnie co-founded Bethesda Workshops in 2001 and has directed the program since its beginning. Under her leadership the services expanded to include male sex addicts, partners of sex addicts, and couples struggling with sexual addiction. Marnie is active in every workshop.

She speaks widely to professional conferences, churches and schools and is the author of numerous clinical and inspirational articles. She has earned the designation Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) through the International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals, which is the highest certification in the field.

Course Description: This advanced course takes an in-depth and advanced look at current theories and treatment approaches to addressing sexual addiction. Participants will explore the diagnosis, etiology, disease process, treatment, recovery process, and current research findings for sexual addictions in males and females.

Course Objectives: Within the context of this 22 hour workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss competing theories opposing the acceptance of “sexual addiction” as a disorder.
  • Describe historical models of identifying sexually addictive behaviors.
  • Identify past and current models for assessing sexual addiction.
  • Utilize a 4 tier model of categorizing sexually addictive behaviors.
  • Identify differences between “classic” sexual addiction and “contemporary” rapid onset sexual addiction.
  • Assess readiness in those seeking treatment for sexual addiction.
  • Identify the common symptoms of sexual addiction.
  • Identify 10 different categories of addictive sexual behaviors.
  • Learn the core beliefs of addicts.
  • Assess pros and cons of various sexual addictions assessment tools.
  • Utilize a fantasy assessment with sex addicts.
  • Identify common differential diagnoses to sexual addiction.
  • Describe common co-morbid conditions and cross addictions with sexual addiction.
  • Describe common etiological factors in the development of sexual addiction.
  • Describe the 12 Step model of addiction recovery and how to integrate this into individual therapy.
  • Discuss common criteria for, and benefits of intensive treatment.
  • Utilize the Laaser Healthy Sexuality Model of sexual addictions recovery.
  • Explain and utilize the Trauma Egg in counseling sex addicts.
  • Describe the core concepts of relapse prevention therapy and its application to counseling sex addicts.
  • Identify common behavior interventions to use with sex addicts.
  • Identify common characteristics of differing sexual addiction support/recovery groups.
  • Identify the differences between viewing the spouse as a “co-adddict” and a “trauma victim.”
  • Describe common pitfalls and guidelines in assisting addicts in providing disclosure to spouses and significant others.
  • Identify basic principles for restoring sexual intimacy in couples wounded by sexual addiction.
  • Discuss common issues in cross gender counseling for sexual addiction.
  • Recognize distinctives in counseling female sex and relationship addicts.
  • Recognize distinctives in counseling same sex addictive behaviors in heterosexual and homosexual clients.
  • Discuss self of the therapist issues in counseling sexual addiction.

Professional Students taking the course toward ABCST Sex Therapy Certification on a Pass-Fail basis – $800 (plus textbooks) Registrants are required to complete all course readings and assignments toward Certification.
