Topic: The purpose of this course is to enable students to meet the basic educational requirements for practicing EMDR. This course is designed for professionals and graduate students in a mental health practice field, who wish to work with the traumatized, including those persons who are vulnerable to compassion fatigue. The course, therefore, offers a comprehensive overview of EMDR theory, research, treatment protocol, and strategies for collecting evaluation data when using EMDR.

Students are expected to become fully engaged in this course by reading and completing all assignments, participating fully in all discussions, and experiential exercises. This course satisfies the basic education requirements established by the Academy of Traumatology’s Standards of Certification for Certified Traumatologist, Section D (approved treatment program).

The syllabus reflects the following requirements: (1) Exposure to at least 7 didactic hours and 3+ supervised practicum experience hours in the application of the EMDR protocol and methods. (2) During the small group practicum, the ratio of practicum supervisors to students should be no less that 1 practicum supervisor to 10 students. (3) Students should give and receive EMDR at least four times during supervised practicum sessions. (4) Students will be admonished about the need for at least 9 of the didactic hours and 7 of the practicum hours of the total 31 training hours minimally required before attempting EMDR with a client.
