PRESENTERS

Gary Barnes, PhD

Dr. Gary Barnes is currently Professor of Biblical Counseling at Dallas Theological Seminary. He is a licensed psychologist, a board certified sex therapist, and an ordained Anglican clergy, specializing in marriage and family research, counseling, and training. After graduating from Dallas Seminary, he served as an assistant pastor for seven years and then earned a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Columbia University. While in New York, he was a research project coordinator at NYU Medical Center’s Family Studies Clinic and later completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in clinical child psychology through Parkland Hospital (Dallas) and the Child Guidance Clinics. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, the Christian Association of Psychological Studies and the American Board of Christian Sex Therapists. He also maintains a marriage and family private practice. He and his wife Cathy have two sons, two daughters, two daughters-in-law, a son-in-law and 9 grandchildren. For fun, he races in USA Cycling Masters competition.

Doug Rosenau, EdD

Dr. Doug Rosenau is a Licensed Psychologist, Marriage & Family Therapist, and Diplomat of the American Board of Sexology (ABS). Another pioneer in Christian sex therapy, Doug is a popular speaker and the best-selling author of A Celebration of Sex. He is a full clinical member of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR), and he teaches Human Sexuality as an adjunct professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, Reformed Theological Seminary, and Richmont Graduate University. Dr. Doug is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M.), and received his doctorate (Ed.D.) from Northern Illinois University. As co-founder and current Executive Director of the Christian organization Sexual Wholeness, Inc., he has helped to create the Institute for Sexual Wholeness that trains Christian sex therapists and educators.

James Childerston, PhD

Dr. James Childerston is a clinical psychologist specializing in a broad spectrum of psychological disciplines including individual and couple therapy, 
as well as medical and pharmacological consulting. He is a nationally known author and a widely sought speaker who has led seminars and retreats across the United States on marital enrichment, managing emotions, communication skills and conflict resolution strategies, and fostering relational closeness. He also has demonstrated expertise in treating sexual dysfunction and addressing sexuality and aging. Dr. Childerston is board certified in medical psychology, psychopharmacology, and sex therapy. He is a founder of The Academy of Medical Psychology and served as Vice President for several years before serving 10 years as President.  He is on the faculty of the Institute for Sexual Wholeness and the Board of Directors of Sexual Wholeness, Inc.  He is the co-author of A Celebration of Sex After 50 and Purity & Passion: Authentic Male Sexuality.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This workshop explores the challenges inherent in ethical mental health professional practice while dealing with sexual issues when the beliefs, practices, and values of the professional and the client greatly differ from each other. It will present historical and contemporary views of human sexuality and ethics from both theological and secular perspectives. Sexual meanings, practices and values will be addressed specifically on the topics of sexual identity, gender identity, singleness, marriage, and sexual disorders. Current understandings and standards of practice from the American Psychological Association and American Counseling Association codes of ethics will be examined.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Within the context of this 6-hour workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of the role of sexuality across the lifespan.
  • Assess the impact of diverse viewpoints of human sexuality analyze the implications for sexual practices and relationships.
  • Recognize personal differences of sexual beliefs, practices and values of clients from the current culture of sexual diversity.
  • Utilize a basic knowledge of the current standards of professional practice as articulated by APA and ACA code of ethics.
  • Assess and summarize professional competencies for clinical practice with sexual diversity and sexual issues.
  • Explain the accuracy and utility of materials presented, limitations of content, and most common ethical concerns when practicing as a sex therapist.
