Presenter: Ryan D. Thompson, Psy.D.

Dr. Thompson is a Clinical Faculty Member at Richmont Graduate University in Chattanooga and Atlanta. He is a licensed clinical psychologist and practices at Henegar Counseling Center in Chattanooga. Dr. Thompson is a certified Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) provider and a certified Level 1 PCIT Trainer. He is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Counseling Association (ACA).

Topic: This seminar provides an introduction to Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). The seminar includes an overview of the theoretical background, current research, target population, training guidelines, and tenets of PCIT. The two treatment phases, Child-Directed Interaction (CDI) and Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI) will be explained and demonstrated. A critique of the approach from a Christian perspective will be discussed. The course is an overview of PCIT and does not contribute toward certification as a PCIT therapist.

Learning Objectives: As a result of attending this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the requirements to become a PCIT provider and how to be trained.
  • Recite the target populations for PCIT, with multicultural considerations.
  • Summarize the theoretical background of PCIT.
  • Discuss the empirical research supporting PCIT.
  • Explain the primary tenets and structure for the approach.
  • Describe the basic elements and purpose of Child-Directed Interaction.
  • Describe the basic elements and purpose of Parent-Directed Interaction.
