Parenting in the Wake of Intergenerational Trauma

This module focuses on supporting parents with unresolved complex trauma from their own experiences of familial, intergenerational, systemic or ancestral trauma.  Training addresses why past personal trauma and intergenerational trauma matter in parenting; we repeat that which is familiar. Trainer will speak to potential caregiving challenges for individuals who have had their own past trauma, and provides strategies for self-care and enhancing the parent-child connection.

 Learning Objectives: (1.5 CE hours)

Participants who complete this module will be able to:

  1. Provide an overview of intergenerational and historical trauma and the impact on adults as they move into a parenting role
  2. Identify a range of functional and emotional challenges for caregivers with complex trauma, including examples of possible triggered trauma reactions from caregivers
  3. Discuss caregiver self-care capacity building, included the development of self-awareness and recognizing triggers.
  4. Identify strategies caregivers can use to enhance connection with their children, including co-regulation and self-regulation as it pertains to parenting.
