Presenters: Eniabitobi Kuyinu, Ph.D. and Jama White, Psy.D.

Dr. Kuyinu is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Mercer University Atlanta, her M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Abilene Christian University, a BA in Theology from Life Theological Seminary in Lagos, Nigeria and a BSc in Microbiology from the University of Benin in Nigeria. She also earned her certificate in Christian Sex Therapy at Richmont and a certificate in Biofeedback from STEN Corporation. Her areas of interest include the use of expressive art in therapy and she has training in play therapy and sand tray therapy; sexual pain disorder in women; use of biofeedback in treating anxiety, PTSD, and sexual trauma from childhood sexual abuse and sex trafficking; psychosomatic disorders . She is also particularly interested in Missions and the indigenization of counseling cross-culturally as a tool of cross-cultural missions. She has hosted different groups and individuals on short-term mission trips to Nigeria, West Africa. She is deeply involved in mission work, and pioneered a mission field in Nigeria to include a Church, School and Medical Outreach. She has conducted series of counseling training in Lagos, Nigeria with clergies, lay counselors and school counselors.

Dr. White is a Psychologist and Licensed Professional Counselor and serves as the Assistant Dean of Clinical Training at Richmont Graduate University.  She received both her Psy.D. and M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University in La Mirada, California.   She earned her B.S. in Nursing from East Tennessee State University.   Her areas of clinical work and interest include grief, trauma, health related issues and spiritual concerns.  She has EMDR training as well as Internal Family Systems Level 1 training.  During 10 years in full-time missions work, she served in the U.S., the Philippines, and Kenya.   She has subsequently also collaborated with several missions agencies in Stateside efforts as well as short term missions trips to Russia, Thailand, Greece, and Portugal.  As a result of these experiences, she is very eager to serve in member care for the missionary population and to encourage other mental health professionals interested in this work.

Topic: This seminar will expose participants to helping strategies and techniques that are consistent with the Christian faith, and the cultural worldview of individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Participants will explore specific counseling scenarios that may occurs in counseling individuals and groups cross-culturally. Participants will have opportunity to study the emotional impact of cross-cultural experience on individuals, families, and groups working in the field of Christian ministry.  Uniqueness of the counselor’s role in cross-cultural ministry settings will be addressed with particular attention to issues of advocacy, conflict resolution and cultural self-awareness.

Learning Objectives: As a result of attending this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Develop awareness, knowledge and skills that have broad applicability across cultural and geopolitical boundaries
  • Appraise individual beliefs, personal biases, and judgments related to international cultures and traditions in relation to counseling services.
  • Evaluate counseling approaches in non-western world and Internationalization of the counseling profession.
  • Summarize, the theories of universality, cultural differences and uniqueness in its application to cross-cultural counseling.
  • Evaluate the provision of counseling services in specific countries outside the US.
  • Articulate the value of the counseling process in helping people solve problems and make decisions from a Christian culture-sensitive International context.
  • Develop a greater understanding of the psychological needs of individuals and families in Christian ministry who are preparing, serving or returning from cross-cultural service experiences.
  • Develop an awareness of several appropriate roles of counselors working with missionaries and mission agencies and the pertinent ethical principles governing these roles.
  • Develop an increased understanding of trauma experiences and application of crisis management skills for individuals and families in Christian ministry in cross-cultural settings.
  • Summarize how to effectively counsel individuals and groups cross-culturally through a biblical/theological perspective that promotes appreciation of cultural diversity while maintaining a distinctly Christian viewpoint.
