Topic: Like the cultures in which we live, serve, and build careers, leadership is undergoing continual change. Quickly passing are the days when leaders most often set goals and visions for their followers, then expected others to passively follow the directions, commands, and expectations of the person or persons in charge. This seminar will begin with an overview of contemporary approaches to leadership including:

  • Traditional leadership
  • Uncharted leadership
  • Optimistic leadership
  • Spiritual leadership
  • Self-leadership
  • Global, cross cultural and cross generational leadership
  • Story-telling and public speaking as leadership
  • Post congregational leadership
  • Ten-finger leadership (writing, leading from the computer keyboard, design and art as leadership, leading through music, and other non-traditional leading from our fingertips).
  • Coaching as leadership
  • Mentoring and Journeying as leadership

Following this overview, the major focus will be on mentoring as a form of innovative leadership, especially with young professionals and millennials. Topics include:

  • The meaning and forms of mentoring
  • Methods of mentoring including goal setting
  • Finding mentorees and personal mentors
  • Practical examples of mentoring

Learning Objectives: As a result of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify contemporary trends in leadership methods that go beyond traditional to-down, hierarchical leadership.
  • Utilize leadership mentoring skills that are especially relevant for contemporary cultures.
  • Discuss, evaluate and apply individualized approaches to leadership mentoring.
  • Discern the differences between leadership mentoring, coaching and consulting.
